In this “Knowledge Worker” era we must to be intentional about attracting strategic advisors – i.e. intentional relationships into our lives in order to assist us in navigating the hundreds if not thousands of decisions we must make everyday. I use the term “strategic advisor” to describe wise individuals who possess knowledge of right and wrong and the know how to successfully apply it to everyday life. These people help us minimize failure and maximize success.
When you were growing up, it’s likely that several adults reached out to you in some shape of form as a mentor or coach. More than likely it’s because of these people that you are in the position you are today, or if you are not in the position you desire to be in, it’s likely due to a lack of these people. Let me take you back a few years to explain. Can you recall a life changing relationship with a teacher, manager, or family member? Perhaps a friend’s parent or youth group volunteer with a real gift for connecting with teenagers positively influenced you through school, family, sports, hobbies, and clubs? When you think back, who comes to mind?
In our early twenties, it seems that a shift takes place. No longer do mentors simply find us – we must seek them out.
Who has influenced you the most on the north side of the age of 21? Take a moment to pause and think about this question. Can you recall more than a couple of people? What changed?
My desire is to awaken and motivate you to move past solo contribution and the burden of figuring things out on your own. To graduate forward to building collaborative relationships, win-win scenarios, team productivity, and so on…you will reap multiple benefits by tapping into the unlimited pool of strategic advisors. Andy, great article.
on this questions: “Who has influenced you the most on the north side of the age of 21? … Can you recall more than a couple of people? What changed?”
I would have to say that you, after my Dad, are one of main influencers in my life since 1995 or so.
Good job! (if i do say so myself) ツ
