Leadership 2.0

by andy.christiansen on March 6, 2010

Leadership 1.0 is an irrelevant, outdated form of leadership and management.  It’s a system and style that worked well during the manufacturing age, and partially into the information age. Simply put, it focuses on getting results as equal to or greater than everything else we do, while leadership 2.0 focuses on developing people as equal to or greater than anything else we do.

Leadership 2.0’s motto: Intentionally trained people, produce powerful results!

Leadership 1.0 has been limited in it’s potential, 2.0 is unlimited: - J. Paul Getty said “I would rather have 1% of 100 men than 100% of 1 man.”

The chronological history and progression of these changes is: Manufacturing Age 1900-1980, Information  Age 1980-2010, Creative Age 2010-2040.

As we move from the post information age and into the creative/knowledge worker age, we are overdue to upgrade our leadership capabilities.

Here are five distinctions of the two styles:

LEADERSHIP 1.0

Results focused

Quota based

Hire and fire people

People burn out

Limited potential

LEADERSHIP 2.0

People focused

Training and development based

Recruit and develop the right people

People produce profits

Unlimited potential

If you want to capitalize on the next era of leadership, pursue hiring and developing great people. Results are sure to follow.

Andy: Once again… SPOT ON!

Andy: I agree … again. I think, however, challenging people to attain results instead of just progressing toward results is a large part of developing them. One of the real concerns I have with the “trophy kids” generation is that results no longer matter. Trophy either way..

I totally concur, it’s like we have stopped training a whole generation the Judeo-Christian work ethic thing. When was the last time you saw kids in your neighborhood doing chores or yard work?
