If I were to ask you, what’s the number one trait of a great leader (or put into the corporate area, a great manager) what would you say?
. Time management
. Financial management
. Ability to execute orders
. Masterful at motivating people
. Being self-motivated
While these are good traits, they are not the #1 trait of a great leader. The number one trait is VISION!
VISION is defining what you want. Put in other terms, it’s the faculty of sight; what we see, or a mental image produced by the imagination.
Over 90% of people never allow themselves the opportunity to build a vision. Or they have an idea but it’s too vague to be a vision worth pursing. It seems that we spend little time dreaming big dreams or pondering visions bigger than the status quo.
How are you doing with your vision? Are you excitedly pursuing it? Have you given yourself permission to dream and to set goals to make it a reality? What is the thing that you clearly see and desperately desire? What is the job title, relationship or quality you long to obtain?
Consider these quotes:
“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no
vision.” - Helen Keller
“The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision.” – Theodore Hesburgh
“Where the people lack vision, they will parish.” – Solomon
Blurred vision = a blurred path toward success.
Clear vision = a clear path toward success.
I want to challenge you right now to pull out a piece of paper and refine your vision, or scratch out a vision statement for the first time. Sure, you can spend more time reworking your vision, but get one started immediately and you’ll feel the energy surge.
Follow this acronym to get started: SEE
Simple (make it simple, 20 words or less)
Extraordinary (dream a big dream/vision)
Energizing (when you read your vision it should make your heart beat fast)
Isn’t it time to challenge the status quo!
