ARE YOUR GOALS GOOD?

A Goal is a dream with a date on it. -Napoleon Hill

You must do the thing you think you cannot do. - Eleanor Roosevelt

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
– C. S. Lewis

Day off at seaOne of my favorite techniques around goal setting comes from my friend, Bryan. A few years ago he set a goal of not having any goals. He called it his anti-priorities or things he chose not to do, in order to make room for the things he wanted to do.

What do you think about his strategy? Is a goal to not have any goals practical? My vote is a resounding yes!

Bryan was so programmed or in his words over-programmed that he had to make a clean break from his routine. His current system was not serving him well anymore. His lifestyle was cutting off his ability to dream and think clearly and his most important relationships were starting to unravel.

We are all creatures of habit, so much so that we often have to engage extreme measures in order to make significant shifts. In the long run Bryan’s strategy paid-off royally at work and at home.

So, as you take time to plan the things you want to do in 2010 give equal time to the things you will stop doing.
