In life and in business do you tend to fly solo or learn from others?
I got my big start in the business world when I was twelve years old. I saw this kid I knew mowing someone else’s lawn and asked him, “Why are you mowing their lawn?” When he told me he was being paid to mow their lawn, I was incredulous at first. “You mean they’re actually paying you to mow their lawn?” When he nodded, a light bulb went off in my head. Up to this point in my young life, mowing the lawn was something you did because your parents told you to. They didn’t pay you—you just did it. And when you got done, you joined your buddies at the ball field. You didn’t mow someone else’s lawn. Well, before the end of the day, I was in the lawn mowing business.
