Throughout history, successful people⎯ young and old, male and female⎯have used strategic advisers or wisdom people to reach their goals. Today we are busier than ever and overloaded with information.  The time to process critical decisions and opportunities is at risk every day, so why go it alone?

Of the three basic resources at our disposal⎯time, money, and people⎯ often people are the resource we leverage the least, yet it is the most available.  While time and money are limited, people are unlimited!  Often these potential advisors require nothing more than an invitation and a cup of coffee.

Here are three simple steps to connect with wisdom people for personal and professional growth.

1.  Have a clear purpose. Prior to extending the invitation, create one or two goals for the meeting. A few ideas include: to seek advice, to hear their story or to brainstorm.
2.  Be curious! Ask powerful questions then listen intently. “Tell me about your career achievements.” What would you change if you could do it over again?” “What advice would you give me at my age?” Or make up your own questions.
3.  Always thank them. End the meeting on time and pay for any meal or beverage.

Have an attitude of gratitude and enjoy the benefits.
